Idol Week Ending 01/30/09 - Shortest post ever..

I thought this week was awful. I liked the girls whose Dad died, and I can't remember anyone else. Seriously, a very very WEAK week of idol. BUT, next week is Hollywood! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Hollywood week. I can't wait!!!!!!!!

Yes, this update was weak but they need to give me material to work with...

January 20th, 21st Week 2 Impressions

This week brought us to San Fransisco and Louisville. Both shows were an hour, and there really wasn't all that much to talk about, to be honest. On the left is Adam Lambert. Adam is part of the cast of wicked, has a haircut like a Jonus Brother (that's spelled wrong, i can feel it) and is going to do really well. He got an excessive amount of time, which not many people have this year which leads me to believe the judges think he will do well.

Then we have Joanna Pacitti. Prepare for cries of "she's not an amateur!" as she is another signed and subsequently cut pop star who never had a hit song (although Brtiney Spears is using one of her songs for Circus, which just means the label is recycling old songs that it never used. She's really pretty, she seemed nice and she sang really well. Not much not to like.

Other than that the show was pretty uneventful. This year it seems good to have a sick mom, cute kids, or just be really nice as they have let several people through just for begging and pleading or having a nice story. Hollywood first cuts this year are going to be easy, and the first sets of auditions there awful, as there are a lot of people who don't belong (the spanish girl who gave simon her racy pictures, the bikini girl, the guy this week with the 2 kids, etc.). They just aren't good.

They also zoomed through a bunch of people who sounded really good for some reason. (Sometimes this is because the people sing songs that are not cleared, so they make them sing something else so they have a song clip, but the actual audition can't be used.)

Hopefully next week has some more good people but Puerto Rico is coming, and from what Simon and others said it was one of the worst audition sites (in terms of talent coming out) they ever had.

January 13th, 14th - Week 1 Impressions

I REALLY like Kara. I REALLY want Paula to go away and be replaced by Kara. She is however making sure Paula gets less airtime, and with less airtime, Paula's fawning over people who suck during the Top 12 will be much less disruptive. Paula looks semi concious this year which is good, although she still has yet to say even one interesting thing in the first 4 hours. I don't think that will change.

This week was interesting, although very little left a lasting impression, good or bad. I liked Emily Wynne-Hughes (on the left). There seems to often be a female rocker, and she has a nice tone to her voice that is more popish actually than rock. I also like Ariana Afsar, the girl who said she took care of old people, and told Simon yes, she could help Paula if she came to town. (Either really sarcastic or not too bright, that Ariana).
One thing that I was at a loss is how people didn't know Kara. They couldn't spend ten seconds of the many hours on line learning her name? Hi Simon, Paula, Randy and Other Judge! Except for that one girl with the cowboy hat who was her BIGGEST fan (and totally FOS).

And of course we had bikini girl.

Telling Ryan she'd make out with him, telling Kara she sang better than her, and getting a golden ticket basically because Simon could tell it was irritating the women. Kara got brownie points with me for telling her "just come naked next time".

Speaking of bikini's we had Casey Carlson, who actually apparently is a bikini model, but for calendars used to raise money for cancer research. I thought she was really good actually and she's cute, and could be a factor later on.

I also remember Alex Wagner-Trugman (the really dorky guy who sang Baby Come to Me (and asked Randy to sing the chorus), the dorky indian guy who studied southern bbq or something, the horror movie camera guy, and a variety of strange or dorky people who actually sang well, which was bizarre. You could play on this show "Good or Not" because you couldn't always judge by the looks (except for the guy who sang the songs about his mom and grandman, you knew that was going to be bad).

Von Smith and Michael Castro were the only other two things that registered with me. There is NO way Michael Castro gets to Top 36 unless he's outstanding because he'll go Top 12 easily just on the name - I expect the judges to go hard on him.

For those who like spoilers, the judges choose the Top 36 next week, and it will definitely leak on the internet. I'll post a link to it here, but won't speak on it until it's shown on tv of course.

Yahoo Blogger Posts about Idol Changes

Great stuff...
http://tv.yahoo.com/blog/when-idol-becomes-idle--77

GREAT article touching on the changes, both official and rumored. And the person also touches on the new judge possibly replacing Paula, which is really what I think. (You don't put the backup QB on the field because you want the starter to play...). Check it out.

One change from there I didn't know about was the shorter results show. Thank god. The hour long ones were awful.

Pool Preview

Idol Returns January 13th for an 8th Season. Yes, we will be having our pool and it seems a lot of the people in the pool are still at the same job and emails so that’s definitely a good thing! As always, if anyone wants in, please include them (and if you want out let me know!). Changes abound, with most of them being logical even if they aren’t what I agreed with. (I wanted a new judge REPLACING an old one, not just a new judge.) In general I think Idol had good buzz ending last season even though the ratings overall were low, the finale ratings were not bad at all, ratings will no doubt be up this year (event TV during a recession?) and both David Cook and David Archuleta had hit singles (Cook with three top 40 singles so far and Archuleta having a top 5 single).

February 11th is the start of the voting with the Top 36 and March 6th starts our pool with the final members of the Top 12 being announced!

Changes
-Hollywood week on TV is extended a week. Thank god. It was 2 hours total last year, and they basically didn’t show anything. It made the Top 24 really flat the first week, because who were these people?
-Bad auditions will be cut down during the audition shows. Instead we will have a “Worst Of” type show at the end of the final audition week. Makes sense to me. When the bad auditions are the whole show, it minimizes the impact anyone good can have.
-There is no Top 24 weeded out this year. Instead we return to the Season 2 format, where we have 36 finalists, 18 men and 18 women. We will have three weeks with 12 performers. Each week the top male vote getter, top female, and next top person (male or female) will be chosen. That will be 9. Then the judges will pick three wildcard people based on a 4th show which will contain the judges remaining favorites performing, with the judges choosing the last 3 spots. It’s not clear if they will be chosen right away or during another show. This is a good change. The last contestants chosen in the Top 24 always seem to be random, cookie cutter type people. (Simon said the Top 24 had become a battle of cookie cutter blondes, and he couldn’t even remember their names at that point. I don’t disagree). Also, no theme Top 36 weeks, it’s any song on the billboard Top 100 chart for any given year from 1956-2008. That’s pretty broad. I also like this because it gives people more time to know who the contestants are, which can’t hurt.
-And last but certainly not least, We have judge #4. (I still think Paula gets “sick” or something happens to her at some point.)
Kara DioGuardi.

http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/?pid=1393

She is a songwriter and producer and apparently people (not me) know who she is because most articles mentioned her without giving much background! Simon has spoken highly of her which I think is for 2 reasons, she cuts down on Paula’s rambling time and she gives Simon the ability to tie the vote, and the say “I am the tiebreaker so X wins” which must be a huge ego boost. Who is going to care at all what Randy and Paula say now. It’s new judge, and then Simon. We’ll see how this goes.

I’ll probably start writing things here soon that I see about some of the contestants that already have buzz. There are always people at this time that are already looking like possible favorites.
